Used car salesman may try and sell you a pile of junk. Speaking from experience, it's no fun to find out just a couple of months down the line that you've just been sold a lemon.

Today, I would say I'm pretty experienced in this area. But it took years of trial and error to learn how to get the best value for my money when buying a used car.

So don't be fleeced! If you want to make sure every used car you buy is a 'best buy', do what I do and just follow the 8 tips outlined below, and don't miss even a single one. It's the closest thing to foolproof you can get!

1.Watch out for rust. Run a fridge magnet over the body of the car. If it stops sticking, the body has been filled in.

2.Keep your eyes peeled for any signs of an accident, for example: dents, bulges, or different shades of paint.

3.Compare the mileage with the age and condition of the car. Your best bet is a car that has a full service history.

4.Make sure that all the lights, indicators, brakes, hooter and wipers are working.

5.Check under the car for any oil or water leaks.

6.Insist that the seller supplies the vehicle with a roadworthy certificate.

7.Test drive the car on both a freeway and in a built-up area.

8.Finally, a comprehensive vehicle test costs under 100 dollars, but I assure you, it's worth every penny. It could save you thousands in the long run.

So, now you're set! Follow these tips and you will be well on your way to making sure that your used car gives you maximum value for money.
